Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 3:8-11
With Sweden at war with Poland, King Gustavus Adolphus ordered the construction of a massive warship to strengthen his navy. Construction on the Vasa began in 1626, and it took most of three years for the huge ship to be completed. From the battlefield the king sent a series of messages insisting that the ship be finished and launched as soon as possible. As a result, concerns about the stability of the ship were ignored, and on August 10, 1628, the Vasa set off on her maiden voyage. The ship was extremely top-heavy in large part because of more than sixty brass cannons installed on her gun decks. Because not enough ballast had been added, when a strong gust of wind caught her less than a mile after she left port, the Vasa rolled over and sank in full view of the thousands who had come to witness her first trip.
If our lives do not have a firm and solid ballast at the foundation, we will not be stable when the storms of life blow. We must build on the only sure foundation, Jesus Christ, learning His Word and living by it. Otherwise we will be subject to all sorts of temptations and false teaching. “That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive” (Ephesians 4:14). In a world of lies and deception we have unchanging and unfailing truth on which to build our lives.
