And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:
Ephesians 1:19-21
I read about a missionary who arrived on the field to find that the car he was to use wouldn't start unless it was pushed. He learned to be very careful to always park at the top of a hill so that he could more easily push it so it would start. After two years of doing this, a new missionary came to replace him at that station. As the first missionary explained the need to park strategically to make sure the car would start, the new man lifted the hood. The first missionary watched in amazement as the new missionary tightened the connector to the battery terminal. He closed the hood, turned the key, and the car started without needing to be pushed for the first time in two years. The only problem was that the starter for the engine wasn't connected to the power source.
Nothing that we attempt to do for God apart from the power of God can produce the result we want and need. If we find ourselves pushing and pushing in His work, we need to stop and make sure that we are rightly connected to Him. It is never our talent or strength or diligence that produces results, but His power given free reign to work in our lives. “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us” (Ephesians 3:20). One of our most important tasks as believers is to ensure that we allow nothing in our lives that would hinder God's power from working freely in and through us.
