If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
Isaiah 58:13-14
Ever since the Garden of Eden, Satan has been telling people that God's rules are designed to keep them from enjoying good things. As a result, people often fall into the trap of resenting God's commandments, even if they are following them outwardly. The devil knows that if our hearts are filled with resentment at what God calls us to do, it will not be long before we stop doing it. Rather than regarding God's rules for our lives as a burden, they should be viewed as evidence of His love for us and His desire to protect us. Obeying God is a way that we demonstrate our love for Him, and if we love Him as we should, we will not find obedience to be a burden. “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous” (1 John 5:3).
In order for us to delight in God's commandments, we must love His Word that conveys them to us. The Bible is not an ancient collection of fables and moral lessons, but the guidebook for living in a way that pleases God. It needs to be kept in our hearts and minds continually. “O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day” (Psalm 119:97). The more that we allow God's Word to guide our thoughts and actions, the more we will find joy and delight in doing what He says. God always gives the best to those who obey Him, not from necessity but from the heart.
