Loneliness

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.

Psalm 133:1-3

Chronic loneliness is a problem that affects millions of people, with devastating physical and emotional results. Professor Julianne Holt-Lunstad discovered in a study that being consistently lonely had the same damaging health impact as smoking fifteen cigarettes per day. She said that loneliness “can make you feel bad about yourself, and then make you even less likely to want to socialize with others [out of] fear of rejection, but it can also then influence how you perceive the world and social situations that can lead to a negative spiral.” Her research revealed that a high percentage of people who regularly feel lonely suffer negative effects on both their cardiovascular and brain health, and that loneliness may also be linked to an increased risk of depression.

God did not design people to be alone. Even before the Fall He created Eve to fill the void in Adam's life. In fact, although throughout the six days of Creation, God repeatedly stated that what He had made was good, He specifically stated that man being alone was not good: “And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him” (Genesis 2:18).

Circumstances in our lives sometimes leave us in lonely places. Additionally, our society does a number of things that promote and create loneliness. But as Christians we have a source of fellowship and community that God designed. The local church should be a unified body of believers that functions as a source of encouragement and hope to each other. This is one reason why it is essential that Christians engage in the body life of their local church. “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching” (Hebrews 10:25).

We need other people in our lives and they need us as well.
