But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. 1 Peter 2:9-11

Charles Spurgeon was saved as a fifteen year old. He had planned to go to a church service on a snowy Sunday morning, but unable to reach his intended destination, stopped at a little chapel on the way. The pastor had not been able to get there, so a layman gave a simple message, and Spurgeon accepted the Lord. A few days later he wrote, “O great and unsearchable God, who knowest my heart, and triest all my ways; with a humble dependence upon the support of Thy Holy Spirit, I yield up myself to Thee; as Thy own reasonable sacrifice, I return to Thee Thine own. I would be for ever, unreservedly, perpetually Thine; whilst I am on earth, I would serve Thee; and may I enjoy Thee and praise Thee for ever! Amen.”

Everything that we are and everything that we have is a direct result of God's grace and mercy. What He has given to us freely, without any effort or deserving on our part, is beyond our ability to even fully comprehend. We received it without earning it, but that does not mean that we are then turned loose to live any way we choose. Paul wrote, “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?” (Romans 6:1-2). The purpose and plan of God for every believer is to be consecrated to Him, and live a life marked by holiness. The same power which saved us gives us the means to overcome temptation and sin and to live victoriously through Christ.

Today's Growth Principle
God saves us to live in this world in a way that brings honor and glory to His name.
