The Atheist Who Has Lost His Faith

The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Psalm 14:1-3

Noted author and playwright George Bernard Shaw was a devout and committed atheist. He had little use for Christianity and frequently made fun of believers. Yet somewhere in his heart he recognized the emptiness of his position, and it occasionally showed in his work. In his play Too Good to Be True, Shaw wrote this speech for one of the characters: “The science I pinned my faith to is bankrupt: its tales were more foolish than all the miracles of the priests, its cruelties more horrible than all the atrocities of the Inquisition. For its sake I helped to destroy the faith of millions of worshipers in the temples of a thousand creeds. And now look at me and behold the supreme tragedy of the atheist who has lost his faith—his faith in atheism, for which more martyrs have perished than for all the creeds put together.”

Without God, man has no true hope. God's existence cannot be credibly denied, no matter how devoutly someone professes He is not real. The whole world is a declaration of God's power and presence in our lives. “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork” (Psalm 19:1). Yet despite the proof that surrounds us, many people refuse to accept that God is real and that He is the ultimate Judge over everything. While this may make it possible for people to live as they choose in the present, it has devastating eternal consequences. Those who reject God in this lifetime will spend eternity without Him, having missed out on what He would graciously and freely have given them if they had only believed.

Today's Growth Principle
We must be alert to every opportunity to share the gospel with those who are lost while there is still time.

PSALM 73
